The first books, and the people who shared them
In 2015, a four-year-old began asking his neighbours for books. The photographs from that first collection are where Pages of Joy starts.

A beginning in the neighbourhood
The earliest photographs we have are from a neighbourhood book collection in 2015. Children stand together holding books — no banner, no campaign, no organisation behind them. Just an act of sharing, carried out directly.
Vrishank was four or five years old when he started asking for books. What began as a child’s enthusiasm became, over the following decade, book drives, permanent libraries, reading sessions and educational support across five Indian states.
The part worth noticing
We do not know how many books that first collection gathered, and we have chosen not to guess. The number was never the point of it.
What the photographs record is the premise the whole initiative still rests on: that a child who wants to give another child a book does not need permission, funding or a plan. Everything since — the 12,000 books, the eleven libraries — is that same act, repeated at scale.
