Our commitment
An initiative about access to reading should not publish a website that excludes people. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across this site.
What we have done
- Semantic HTML throughout, with a single logical heading hierarchy on every page.
- Keyboard navigation for everything interactive: menus, the search dialog, the image viewer, filters, accordions and every form. A skip link is the first focusable element on every page.
- Visible focus indicators on all focusable elements, with sufficient contrast.
- Accessible forms: every field has a real label, required fields are announced as required, errors are associated with their field and announced, and focus moves to the first error on submit.
- Alternative text on images. Where a photograph has not yet been added, a generated placeholder is used and described, so nothing is an unlabelled broken image.
- Colour contrast meeting AA for body text and interface elements. Colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
- Reduced motion: all animation and smooth scrolling is disabled for anyone whose system requests reduced motion.
- Responsive layouts that work from small phones to large displays, and remain usable when text is enlarged to 200%.
- Screen-reader support: dialogs trap focus and restore it on close, status changes are announced politely, and decorative elements are hidden from assistive technology.
Known limitations
We are honest about where we are not yet finished:
- Some content has not yet been reviewed by a screen-reader user in a real session. Automated checks are not the same thing.
- Photographs added in future will need alt text written by the person who uploads them. The admin interface requires it, but the quality of that text is a human responsibility.
- We have not yet carried out a formal third-party accessibility audit.
Reporting a barrier
If something on this site does not work for you, please tell us. Write to hello@pagesofjoy.org with the page and what happened. We treat accessibility reports as bugs, not feature requests, and we will reply.
Alternatives
If any part of this site is unusable for you, we will provide the information another way — by email, or by phone if that is easier. Nothing on this site is so important that it can only be reached through this site.
